Health check for companies and employees

A health check for companies means that the employer offers employees a blood test that measures cardiovascular risk, blood sugar, liver and kidney function, haemoglobin (Hb), and thyroid. Sampling takes place at a clinic and the result always goes to the employee themselves – the employer never sees individual test results. A broad adult package once a year is the most common arrangement, and the cost per employee corresponds to a few hours of sick leave.

Why do companies offer health checks?

The most common causes of long-term sick leave among adults of working age are conditions that develop slowly and silently: high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids, beginning type 2 diabetes, iron deficiency, and thyroid disorders. What they have in common is that they are almost always visible in a blood test long before they cause symptoms that lead someone to seek care.

An annual health check therefore serves as an early warning signal. It does not replace the occupational health service's statutory checks for hazardous work, but it catches the lifestyle-related risks that otherwise only get discovered at an acute visit.

How do you organize the sampling?

Each employee receives their own test account and books a sampling appointment themselves at a clinic near the workplace or home. The referral is created automatically upon ordering, so no one needs to contact a health centre. Sampling takes about ten minutes and most choose a morning appointment as broad packages with blood lipids and blood sugar are preferably taken while fasting.

The result is published digitally and commented on by a licensed doctor. The employee sees which values are outside the reference range and if anything should be followed up in healthcare.

  • Order one package per employee – the same test for everyone allows for comparable follow-up over time.
  • Let employees book sampling themselves within a set time window, for example four weeks.
  • Repeat annually at the same time so that changes can be tracked.

What does the employer get to see?

Test results are sensitive personal data and are covered by both healthcare confidentiality and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The employer never has access to individual employees' values, and the employee chooses entirely for themselves if anything is to be shared further.

What the employer can receive is an anonymous summary at a group level when the data set is large enough – for example, what percentage had elevated blood lipids. Participation should always be voluntary.

What does a health check for companies cost?

The price per employee depends on how many markers the package contains. A broad adult package typically lies in the same range as a simpler annual company benefit, and all prices for individual tests are in the price list. The lower price indicated for a test applies to subscriptions with annual health checks – it is not a temporary promotional price.

Health checks can in many cases be counted as a tax-free staff welfare benefit when offered to all employees on equal terms, but the tax assessment depends on the arrangement. Check with your accounting consultant before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Does the employer see the employees' test results?
No. The test result goes to the employee themselves and is covered by confidentiality and data protection rules. The employer can at most receive an anonymous summary at a group level.
Which test is best as an employee benefit?
A broad adult package with blood lipids, HbA1c, liver and kidney values, blood status, and TSH covers the most common risks in working age and works for both women and men.
Does the company need to sign a contract with a health centre?
No. The referral is created automatically upon ordering and the employee books sampling at an accredited sampling site.
How often should a company health check be done?
Once per year is a reasonable starting point. This makes the values comparable over time and changes are detected while they are still small.
Is the health check a tax-free benefit?
It depends on the arrangement. Benefits offered to all employees on equal terms and of lesser value can be counted as staff welfare, but the assessment should be made by your accounting consultant.
Can employees choose tests themselves?
Yes. Some companies instead provide an amount per employee, who then chooses the package themselves. The test guide helps in choosing based on age, gender, and goals.
