Health check after 40 – what should be included?

After 40 years of age, a health check should include blood lipids (cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), blood sugar (HbA1c), liver and kidney values, as well as blood status, thyroid test, and Vitamin D. It is at this age that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes begin to appear in the blood, usually completely without symptoms. The value lies in measuring early and then following the trend year by year.

Why 40 is a good starting point

Around age 40, several things begin to change simultaneously: metabolism slows down, muscle mass decreases if you do not exercise, blood pressure rises slowly, and blood lipids worsen for many. None of these changes are noticed. They are, however, visible in the blood, and the earlier you have a baseline to compare against, the clearer it becomes when something starts moving in the wrong direction.

What should be included

A health check at this age should cover the four areas where early changes can be addressed.

  • Heart and vessels: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.
  • Blood sugar: HbA1c, which shows the average over two to three months.
  • Liver and kidneys: ALAT and creatinine with eGFR.
  • General: blood status, ferritin, TSH, Vitamin D, and B12.

How to interpret the result

A single value just outside the reference range is rarely dramatic. What matters is the direction: an LDL that rises three years in a row, or an HbA1c that creeps upwards, says more than a single measurement. Therefore, regularity is more important than scope – a medium-sized test every year provides more than a very broad test just once.

The test result is commented on by a licensed doctor who explains what the values mean and if anything should be followed up within healthcare.

Frequently asked questions

Which tests are most important after 40?
Blood lipids, HbA1c, as well as liver and kidney values. They catch the most common risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, which rarely cause symptoms at this age.
Do I need a comprehensive health check already at 40?
A medium-sized package covering heart, blood sugar, liver, kidneys, and blood status is sufficient for most. Broader tests are justified in case of symptoms or known family history.
How often should I test myself?
Once a year. The trend between measurements is more informative than a single value.
Are senior packages included at this age?
No. Tests designed for seniors are aimed at significantly older people and are not recommended for those aged 40–49.
Do I need to fast?
Blood lipids and blood sugar are preferably measured while fasting. Book the sampling in the morning for convenience.

Unsure which test suits you? Start the test guide – a few questions about age, sex and goals give a suggestion with three tests.
