Health check after 50 – what should be included?

After 50 years of age, a health check should include blood lipids, HbA1c, kidney function (creatinine and eGFR), liver tests, blood status, TSH, and Vitamin D. For men, PSA for prostate health is added. At this age, the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes is clearly elevated, and an annual check ensures that changes are detected while they can still be influenced by lifestyle or treatment.

What changes after 50

Blood pressure and blood lipids rise for most, kidney function declines slowly, and insulin sensitivity decreases. In women, oestrogen falls in connection with menopause, which increases the risk of both cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. In men, prostate health becomes relevant.

What should be included

A broader package is justified at this age, as several organ systems should be monitored simultaneously.

  • Heart and vessels: cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides.
  • Blood sugar: HbA1c.
  • Kidneys and liver: creatinine with eGFR, ALAT.
  • Thyroid and haemoglobin (Hb): TSH, haemoglobin (Hb), ferritin.
  • Men: PSA. Women: extra focus on blood lipids after menopause.

Follow the trend, not single values

An annual test allows you to see the direction. An eGFR that drops slowly, an HbA1c that rises, or a PSA that increases between measurements is more informative than a single figure. Take the test under similar conditions every time: same time of day and same fasting state.

Frequently asked questions

Which tests are most important after 50?
Blood lipids, HbA1c, kidney function, and liver tests, along with blood status and TSH. For men, PSA should be included.
Should men test PSA after 50?
Yes, PSA is relevant from around age 50, or earlier with family history. An elevated value does not necessarily mean cancer but should be followed up.
What should women consider after menopause?
The risk of cardiovascular disease increases when the protective effect of oestrogen diminishes, so blood lipids and blood pressure should be monitored annually.
How often should I test myself?
Annually. If you have treatment for blood pressure, blood lipids, or diabetes, follow the checks recommended by your doctor.
Is a senior package right for me?
Tests designed specifically for seniors are aimed at significantly older people. At age 50–64, a broad adult package is better suited.

Unsure which test suits you? Start the test guide – a few questions about age, sex and goals give a suggestion with three tests.
